Central American leaders formalise support for UN entryDominican Republic, 27 May 2001 AFP -- Eight leaders from Central America and the Dominican Republic formalised their support for Taiwan's bid to join the United Nations and other international organisations during a summit yesterday with President Chen Shui-bian. "There's a specific paragraph for Taiwan's access to international organisations" in the summit's final statement, Salvadoran Foreign Minister Maria Eugenia Brizuela said during a briefing on the meeting - the third between Central America and Taiwan. Signed by all summit participants, the statement "reiterates the support we've always given Taiwan in acknowledging the friendship and real solidarity it has extended to our people for so many years", Ms Brizuela said. |
